How to celebrate Christmas without breaking the bank

Celebrate Christmas without breaking the bank! No one likes to be stingy during Christmas but it's all too easy to get carried away when shops are so inviting and the mood is so festive!

This doesn't mean you need to bust your budget though. Here are some easy ways to keep your spending in check without being the Grinch…

Don't buy new Christmas décor

This is one of the easiest ways to decrease spend . If you haven't already noticed, there's not much variety in the way of Christmassy decorations: snow, mistletoe, reindeer – you get the picture. The stuff is evergreen so get creative with how you mix and match or move things around when you're reusing ornaments, wreaths and what-not. And if you really must have stuff you haven't used before (hey, Christmas pics on Facebook NEED to look different, right?), why not do a swap with neighbours or some close friends?

Do organise a potluck

Even if you're used to being the host of your family or friends' annual Christmas luncheon or dinner, it needn't fall on you to foot the entire bill. Get guests to chip in – they'd be more than willing as they'd usually bring something anyway. So instead of taxing their imagination, ask them to bring something specific – a salad, a meat dish, baked potatoes and voila! Your Christmas meal is assembled.

Don't forget your past season's outfits

They can be easily refurbished as this season's snazzy partywear! Especially since formal outfits don't tend to get much exposure anyway. Turn a long dress into a mini or sew a funky pocket on a plain tee to jazz it up.

Do speak in code

Promo codes to be exact. Especially if you're ordering gifts online. Well-established online stores always give away promo codes for loyal customers or new buyers. Ask your friends or search the company's Facebook pages – usually, gift voucher or promo codes are listed there.
