Leading homegrown financial services company Singlife today announces its sponsorship of Terry Hee and Jessica Tan, who are making history as the first Singapore-born mixed-doubles duo to represent Singapore in badminton at the Olympics. In the Badminton World Federation (BWF) ranking system, only the first 13 eligible pairs are allocated slots, with a maximum of two pairs from each country.
The shuttlers’ entry to the Games marks the highest point thus far in a remarkable rollercoaster ride. Since becoming a mixed-doubles pair in 2014, Terry and Jessica have persevered through national service commitments, injuries, and personal setbacks. With unwavering determination, dedication and teamwork, the couple built a bond that extended beyond the courts when they married in October 2021. The Sports School alumni have demonstrated a commitment to chase their dreams, and while their chances of clinching a medal at the Paris Games are modest, Singlife believes they embody the spirit of never giving up. The world No. 19 pair are a reminder that Singaporeans can dream big and should dream big to achieve excellence on the world stage.
Terry and Jessica's story resonates with Singaporeans, as they represent the resilience and determination embodied by Singapore’s founding fathers when they built Singapore. The Olympics run from 26 July to 11 August, and as Singaporeans prepare to celebrate the nation’s 59th birthday, Singlife hopes to rally support for the duo on their Olympic adventure.
Terry and Jessica represent all Singaporeans who work hard and are committed to doing what it takes to realise their dreams. For some, the dream is representing their country at the grandest sporting stage, for others, it’s being able to retire on their own terms or raising a family. Singlife is committed to empowering all Singaporeans, as a trusted partner to take control of their financial wellbeing and chase their passions.
Singlife Group Chief Executive Officer, Pearlyn Phau said: “As a homegrown company, we are incredibly excited to support Terry and Jessica on their Olympic journey. Their commitment and inspiring partnership resonate with Singaporeans. Despite setbacks, they have pressed on to qualify for the Olympics and fulfil a dream they have been chasing for years. We believe their story exemplifies the can-do spirit that defines our nation, and I’m sure many Singaporeans will be inspired by Terry and Jessica to pursue their dreams, no matter how big or small.”
Terry, 28, and Jessica, 30, have notched up three titles on the BWF World Tour since tying the knot, and a historic gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. They were also the first Singaporean mixed-doubles pair to make it to the semi-final round of a prestigious Super 1000 series tournament this year at the Malaysia Open in January. The duo has soared up the rankings through good tournament strategy and hard work, though Jessica was injured during a recent tournament. At a signing ceremony to mark the sponsorship, the couple spoke about their upcoming chances and how they were preparing for Paris.
Jessica Tan said: “We have been working hard to prepare and improve our game. I was injured recently, but this will not stop my preparation for Paris. In fact, we will be flying off to train in Denmark in mid-July to better acclimatise in Europe. The Olympics have always been a dream for both of us, and we are certainly living our dream now. Singlife’s support means a lot. It gives us an extra boost to make the nation proud on sport’s biggest stage.”
She added: “We hope to raise awareness amongst athletes, young married couples and working adults regarding the importance of financial planning. You never know what unexpected things life is going to throw at you, and it’s best to be as prepared as you can.”
Terry Hee said: “Singlife's support is invaluable as we prepare for the biggest challenge of our careers. Over the years, we’ve grown in strength – physically and mentally. With Singlife on our side, we know we’re stronger than ever, and we’ll focus on representing Singapore with pride at the Olympics.
He added: “We are thrilled to be the first Singapore-born badminton players to qualify for the mixed-doubles at the Olympics, and we hope to inspire young boys and girls to continue to pursue their sporting passion and to dream big.”
Singlife stands firmly behind Terry and Jessica as they embark on this momentous journey, along with all other Team Singapore athletes, as they live their Olympic dreams.
